President Donald Trump gave his first State of the Union address on January 30th, 2018 in the nation’s capital with the Russia issue still overhead. President Trump was very pro-America throughout his entire speech and encouraged the nation to come together, because after all we are all Americans. But how can we truly come together as a nation united under one presidential administration when many approval ratings suggest that many Americans feel they cannot trust the leader in office?
Vox News, CNBC, and CNN predicted the president’s focus would be on his tax and economic achievements and that he would steer clear of the mere word, “Russia.” CNN reported that the president aimed to deliver a unifying speech after a year full of divisions on racial, political, and gender issues. Many of these issues, investigators have found, were encouraged by Russian nationals. Russian-made propaganda, for example anti-Hillary social media accounts and white supremacy twitter posts, where just the tip of the iceberg in Russian “fake news” and “bots” designed to influence American citizens. Investigators are still looking into the extent of Trump’s involvement, but they are getting closer and closer to the truth.
Trump’s state of the union speech was unifying and more according to critics. He focused on real Americans who were military heroes, or who had suffered a loss of a child due to gun violence, and some who had a booming small business and helped others get jobs. Trump hit on every topic involving his success as president thus far and steered clear of the Russia scandal. It was evident through his words that he wants to keep The United States as top dog and a key world player.
In the address, Trump made several promises and suggested a number of proposals he would like carried out in the coming years. CNN’s Editor at large, Chris Cillizza, stated that above all, “Trump’s priority is America and he will always put our country first.” As for Trump’s future, it is unpredictable. The Rolling Stone offers a timeline into the facts of what has been revealed about the Trump and Russia scandal including statements from Trump denying having any contact with Putin, Trump’s foreign policy advisor making false statements, and Trump’s pattern of defending his staff and then slamming them on twitter after their mistakes are uncovered to save his own reputation. Eventually, the American citizens may discover what is hiding behind the curtains, but until then, the nation is in a waiting game.
