Yesterday was an historic day. Dominican students, faculty, and staff gathered in front of Caleruega dining hall for 17 minutes to honor the 17 lives lost at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school shooting on February 14, 2018. Lead by the Director of Diversity & Inclusion, Noreen Hasan ‘19, the gathering included a speech from Hasan asking for change, a poem composed by ASDU freshman senator Carmela Dizon, and a praise for Dominican’s community action from Assistant Director Lianni Castro.
When asked about the importance of the event, Hasan said, “I found the event to be incredibly inspiring. I think we often tell ourselves that because we attend such a small university, we can’t make a difference, but just seeing everyone come out and support a cause we’re all passionate about was truly eye opening. It shows that there is a sense of urgency within or community to address issues such as the one tody and moving forward we can hopefully make change happen.”
The walk out was organized by the Associated Students of Dominican University (ASDU). Students wishing to contact them can do so: ASDUemail@students.dominican.edu
